The neighborhood offers stunning views of the West Hills and is the primary gateway to Forest Park, the largest urban forest in the US.
History
Nob Hill was developed in the late 19th century as Portland expanded westward from the river. The area was originally part of the city of Portland's first streetcar suburbs, with the NW 23rd Avenue line opening in the 1880s. The neighborhood's name was borrowed from San Francisco's Nob Hill, reflecting the area's desirable hillside location and status as a fashionable address. The Victorian and Queen Anne homes that line the streets were built between 1880 and 1910, many designed by prominent architects of the era. After a period of decline in the mid-20th century, the neighborhood experienced revitalization in the 1970s and 80s as preservationists restored the historic housing stock and new businesses opened along 23rd Avenue.
